One of the first things most people do after waking up is brush their teeth. It's an essential part of everyone's morning routine and helps you to prepare for your day. Not only is brushing our teeth important for the health of your teeth and gums, but it also benefits your skin and other parts of your body. However, is it better to brush your teeth before or after your breakfast in the morning? Some prefer to eat their breakfast and then brush their teeth to make sure they leave the house feeling fresh while others prefer to brush their teeth before eating anything. Amanda Sheehan - a dental therapist for leading oral health brand, TePe - has answered the age-old question. She explained: "Much has been said about whether it is better to brush your teeth before or after breakfast. "The truth is, it’s best to brush your teeth BEFORE breakfast. Whilst you sleep, the production of saliva slows down, meaning that harmful bacteria, which can cause oral issues like gingivitis, periodontitis, and tooth decay, will be more effective. "By brushing your teeth before breakfast, you are washing away the harmful bacteria and the fluoride in your toothpaste will protect your teeth’s enamel against the bacteria. If you do choose to brush your teeth after breakfast, as some do, you should avoid doing so until 30-60 minutes after eating. "This gives the saliva in your mouth adequate time to neutralize any acids and reduce damage to the tooth surfaces. Whether you choose to brush before or after breakfast, it’s important to make sure you are getting the most out of your oral care routine." She continued: "Brushing your teeth alone will only clean up to 60 percent of your tooth’s surfaces, leaving 40 percent untouched, so make sure you are cleaning the gaps between your teeth with either an interdental brush or floss if the gaps are too small. Try to avoid drinking water when you go to bed, brushing your teeth should be the last thing you do before going to sleep, drinking water can wash away the fluoride in your toothpaste leaving the enamel unprotected in the fight against the harmful bacteria."
